Helping Hand

My group and I were asked to create a company to benefit Milwaukee’s specific needs. Due to the large homeless population, we designed “Helping Hand” to provide resources for anyone in need of food or shelter, regardless of age or demographics.

I worked closely with co-creator Jessi Trauth of The Women’s Center in Waukesha, who gave me guidance on locations and needs of people searching for shelter.  In addition to working with Jessi, I researched Milwaukee statistics, created hashtags for our social media content, and was solely responsible for designing our infographic.

After we established brand guidelines, I was asked to create an infographic to bring awareness to homelessness in Milwaukee. In addition to my statistical research, I reached out to Jessi Trauth of The Women’s Center for more information. Jessi was a great resource in determining what information was vital and where to place our infographics and brochures.

My job was to design an infographic I was only given specific dimensions and the brand guidelines. I began researching local databases for statistics on homelessness, specifically in Milwaukee, WI. Once I determined which information should be included, I sketched visuals to accommodate the facts and make the poster more inviting to readers. As I gathered more information, I continued to check in with my peers to ensure my design was accomplishing our team goals. I then made multiple iterations, until finally settling on this final poster.

One of the issues I faced was with our color palette. I wanted to use a lot of color to grab attention, but certain color combinations were nearly impossible to read. Attempting to add contrast, I began with a black background, but soon realized it didn’t adhere to our brand’s mood board. I decided to switch to white and surveyed classmates and friends on readability and legibility while trying out each color combination.

All of my icons were drawn in Adobe Illustrator, and the poster was created in InDesign.

Here are some of my changes throughout my design process. There differences include background colors, hierarchy of information, icons, and headline edits.
